Schmidt begins the episode asking Jess and Nick where he looks sexist in a room…and they screw with him by asking him to keep showing them the positions.
Winston who used to live with the guys, moves back in. He moved away after becoming a pro ball player (in Lafia), and it’s not really said where Coach went. Jess goes in Winston’s room with breakfast, and awakens him by singing, but he freaks out because she woke him and he was hungover. Jess asks him if she can borrow a tank top, because she doesn’t have any of her stuff because it is still at her ex’s (Spencer) place and Schmidt offers to let her look though his lost and found (items from the girls he has slept with).
Winston and Nick are playing basketball in the apartment, and pass Jess the ball when she almost starts crying about Spencer. She throws the ball and breaks the TV. The guys tell her she has to go get her stuff, in particular her TV, because Winston needs a TV. She says she can’t talk to Spencer because she doesn’t want to end up in a fight with him, because she wants to be friends with him again some day.
They manage to convince her to call Spencer, and they meet in the park. She keeps trying to ask for her stuff back, but Spencer says he can’t give it to her right now because he rode his bike. Spencer convinces her to take the girl he cheated with, Michelle, to the airport (and pick her up the following Sunday).
Jess tries to go to a pawn shop to buy a TV, but can’t afford it, and attempts to steal it, but it’s too heavy for her.
She comes back and tells the guys she didn’t get the TV, and Nick tells her that Spencer is her kryptonite and she isn’t ready to move on. Nick pumps her up by telling her she’s mad and she gets ready to go. They all go to the Spencer’s place, but Jess keeps driving past it, saying just one more time around until she’s ready.
When she finally gets the courage to stop at his place, Jess goes to the door and she hugs him, but then she sees that he didn’t water the plants, and throws the plant, and then screams “I’m going in…” and starts tearing his place apart. She comes out with all her stuff, and drops the TV trying to take her t-shirt back that Spencer is wearing.
The guys stick up for Jess, and she tells Spencer that she’s happy that he cheated because otherwise she would have married him and he would have hurt her, and she loves the new people who have come into her life.
The episode ends with everyone back at the apartment watching Jess’ broken TV, but they don’t know what to watch and aren’t crazy about Jess’ suggestions, so they decide to go out, while Jess and Schmidt stay back to watch Curly Sue.
Also, throughout the episode Schmidt is trying to show Winston that he is the “top dog” now. Schmidt believes the “top dog” should have the largest bedroom, but by the end, he’s convinced that Winston wanted him to believe that, and the top dog should actually have the small bedroom, so he tells Winston they are switching rooms (which was Winston’s plan all along…)
Thoughts:
I definitely didn’t find this episode as funny as I did the pilot. I still really like the dynamic between Jess and the guys, and I love Jess as a character, but overall the story wasn’t that great. I felt the same as I did with the pilot episode in terms of the pacing seeming a bit too fast…I understand it’s a half hour show (21 minutes after you take out commercials), but I feel like maybe the could have skipped the whole “top dog” storyline between Schmidt and Winston. I will keep watching, but I hope the next episodes will be funnier than this one!
