Katherine calls Damon, and tells Damon she knows where Klaus and Stefan are.
Klaus and Stefan arrive in Chicago, and Klaus says there are a lot of memories for “Ripper” (Stefan’s alter ego, when he begins feeding on humans). Stefan says he doesn’t remember much, because he blacked out and partied a lot in those days.
Flashback to the time of Prohibition where Stefan is feeding on a woman in a car. He finishes feeding and walks into a club where a band is playing. The singer (Gloria) spots Stefan and Stefan tells him to save him a dnace. A blonde haired woman approaches Stefan and says she smells the blood of the woman Stefan killed. He asks who she is, and she walks off.
Back in the present, Stefan asks Klaus why he doesn’t just move on now that trying to create the hybrids (vampire/werewolf) has failed. Klaus says he is there to see his favorite witch…
Back at Elena’s house, Elena is sleeping, and rolls over to find Damon in her bed and freaks and tells him to get out. He tells her he knows where Stefan is and to get moving if she wants to come find him in Chicago, but he doesn’t tell her how he found out.
Caroline is still tied up and being tortured by her father, Bill Forbes, and he is trying to find out how she walks in the sun, and then he’ll end it. She shows him her ring, and he pulls it off. He tells her that the vent is releaasing vervain into the air, and there is a window to let in the Sun. He flashes a blood bag in front of her face, and says she is controlled by blood, and then opens the window and it starts burning her back.
Damon and Elena are on their way in a car, and he reads Stefans diary to her, which is talking about blacking out and walking up with women he doesn’t know. Elena pulls the book away and tells Damon to drive.
Flashback to Stefan and a group of guys being loud, so the blonde apporaches him and tells them to be quiet so she can hear the music. He asks her again her name but she doesn’t tell him.
In the present, Stefan and Klaus arrive at Gloria’s place (the same Gloria from the club in the past…she has found a way to keep herself young, but says it’ll catch up to her eventually). She tells Klaus that even though he broke the curse there is still something he isn’t doing right, but to figure out what it is, he has to find the original witch who created the curse. She tells him to bring Rebecca, because she has what Gloria needs. Behind the bar, Stefan finds a picture of he and Klaus together in the past, but Stefan doesn’t remember ever knowing Klaus.

Liz Forbes is trying to get a hold of Caroline, and is in the process of leaving her a message. Tyler arrives at the house and knocks on the door.
Bill is still torturing Caroline with the sunlight. He closes the window, and says he is trying to condition her to associate vampirism with pain…every time she sees human blood she will then suppress the urge. She tells him that is impossible, and he opens the window again.
Elena and Damon arrive at Stefan’s old apartment from Chicago. Damon walks over to a shelf, that acutally hides a list of Stefan’s victims. Damon leaves to go find Stefan and tells Elena to wait there and come up with a plan.
Stefan asks Klaus why he never mentioned that he and Klaus had known each other. Klaus says he hated Stefan back then.
Flashback again to Stefan feeding on a woman, and then the blonde joins in. Klaus appears and reveals that the blonde is his sister (also an original vampire).
Back in the present, Klaus opens the tomb of the woman…the blonde from the past/his sister who has a stake through her heart…Klaus says her name is Rebecca (the one Gloria is looking for). Stefan says he doens’t remember her either, and then Klaus pulls out the stake and “says time to wake up.”

Back in the past Klaus tells Stefan that he killed most of his family. Rebecca said she choose the right side and got to live. A man comes up to Stefan and says he plans to call the Chicago police. He and his wife try to leave, and Stefan compels them to stay. Stefan cuts open the man’s wife’s wrist and lets the blood drip into a wine cup, and then makes the man drink it. He then demands to know his name…it’s Liam.
Klaus said he learned some of his tricks from Stefan…they then head to Stefan’s apartment too.
Damon arrives at Gloria’s bar, and she tells him that Klaus and Stefan will be back later that night, but she won’t tell him what they are up too.
Elena continues to read Stefan’s diary. She hears Klaus and Stefan out in the hallway and hides behind the shelf that Damon had shown her earlier, that hides the names of Stefan’s victims. Klaus knows someone has been there. Klaus says he had always wondered why Stefan needed to know the man’s name that night, and says he realized it was all part of Stefan’s ritual…to write it down and relive the kill over and over again. Stefan knows Elena is hiding and distracts Klaus with some aged alcohol.

Damon finally gets back and tells Elena he knows where Klaus and Stefan are, and be prepared…he’s going to distract Klaus while Elena talks to Stefan.
Back at Gloria’s bar, Klaus tells Stefan that he has Stefan with him know because he liked the way he tortured innocent people and because Stefan used to want to “be his wingman.”
In the past Stefan tells Klaus the reason his family wants him dead is because they didn’t want him to be a king like he was meant to be. Klaus tells Stefan that Rebecca “fancies him” but be careful because she does everything hard including falling in love. He warns her though she will leave him, and Stefan shouldn’t do anything stupid.
Bill tells Caroline when he found out she was a vampire he cried. Caroline tells him she’s adapted and can’t be fixed. He puts the blood in front of her face again, and tells her to try again to resist it…if she can’t learn to resist, he will have to kill her. The Sun has gone down, so he can’t use it anymore for the day to inflict pain so they will continue the next day. He leaves the room, and outside Liz is waiting with a gun pointed at him,. Tyler goes in and gets Caroline out.
Flashback again to the club where Stefan and Rebecca are dancing. The police show up and start firing everywhere in the club…they are using wooden bullets. Rebecca says that means “they are here” They all flee, and Stefan sees Rebecca had lost her necklace (which she had received from a witch) but Klaus compels Stefan to forget he met them until he lets Stefan remember.
In the present, Stefan asks Klaus why he would need to cover his tracks…Klaus says you have to when you are running from someone. Damon arrives andm, so Stefan tells Klaus he is going to get a drink. Stefan and Damon go outside, and Stefan tells Damon that he needs to tell Elena to stop looking for him and that Klaus is close to finding out that Elena is still alive, and the reason that Klaus isn’t able to create more hybrids. Damon tells Stefan to tell Elena himself, and Stefan sees her standing not too far away. Damon goes back inside and sits with Klaus.

Elena tells Stefan to come home, and hugs him. While hugging, she tries to inject him with vervain, but he squeezes her wrist and says “how many times do I have to tell you? I don’t want to go home.”
Inside Klaus grabs Damon by the throat and is about to stake him, when Gloria stops Klaus and tells him to take it outside.
Stefan tells Elena that things just won’t be the same even if he went back because of all the things he has done. He tells her to go, because he doesn’t want to see her or be with her, and then he walks off.

Damon gets in the car and Elena (playing with the necklace Damon gave her…which also happens to be Rebecca’s) tells him to drive.
Caroline is back home and in bed, and Caroline thanks her mom for leaving her dad. Tyler tries to comfort Caroline as she cries because she says her dad hates her.
Klaus is calling out for Rebecca, and she appears and stakes him, but doesn’t kill him.
Flashback to Klaus telling Rebecca that Stefan isn’t coming and they need to get moving. Klaus tells Rebecca to pick Stefan or him, and she tells Klaus goodbye, so he stakes her.
Klaus offers Rebecca a “peace offering” (Stefan), and allows him to remember his past with them. Klaus tells Rebecca that Gloria needs something from her…the necklace she lost.
Damon is on the phone with Katherine letting her know what happened.
Flashback to Katherine walking into the club, where she sees Stefan picking up Rebecca’s necklace. An officer approaches Stefan and asks if he’s ever seen Klaus and Rebecca, but Stefan says he has never seen them before
Katherine in the present flags down a cab and gets inside.
Thoughts:
Overall an interesting episode, giving more insight into Klaus, Rebecca and Stefan’s past. Again the Ripper storyline reminds me very much of Angelus in season 2 of Buffy, but this episode made it even harder for me to like Stefan. I never disliked Angel due to what he did in his past, because a majority of the horrible things he did, he did because he didn’t have a soul/conscience to stop him…Stefan though is doing all these evil things in the present without being able to say it’s because he had nothing to stop him. I understand Elena would want to save him, but I just don’t see how she could ever truly love him again after all of these awful things he did (which I’m glad they acknowledge this fact in the episode). For me, Stefan is really going to have to do something pick to redeem himself, because it can’t just be forgotten that he has killed so many.
