5×01- The Skank Reflex Analysis:

Review of last season…Raj has a crush on Howard’s fiancee Bernadette, Priya, Leonard’s girlfriend/Raj’s sister is moving back to India, and Raj and Penny slept together, but Penny runs out saying “It’s not what it looks like”….

The episode begins with Sheldon and Leonard at the cafeteria at work eating lunch, and Sheldon is trying to figure out what Raj and Penny “looked like.” Sheldon considers it too be a brain teaser, saying that knowing Penny they probably “engaged in coitous” but that’s what it looks like, so they can rule that out (and Sheldon puts on his “thinking cap”). Leonard has to tell Sheldon she was lying (making Sheldon feel silly for wearing his “thinking cap”).

Howard and Raj join the table with an awkward “Hey” between Leonard and Raj. Sheldon asks Leonard if it’s odd being around Raj who slept with his ex, in his bed…Leonard sarcastically says no which Sheldon realizes, but disregard and says he has his own agenda and brings up paintball and an upcoming tournament, hoping to set up a chain of command with himself in charge. Howard and Leonard start to yell at Raj about Penny, Raj replies that he is in love with Penny. Leonard says that Raj falls for any girl who looks at him, including Bernadette (which Howard wasn’t aware of).

Penny is at her apartment drinking wine, feeling horrible for what she did, when Amy shows up assuring her that even Katherine the Great is still called “great” even though she had interspecies relationships with a horse, so Penny can get through sleeping with “a little Indian boy.”

Bernadette shows up at Raj’s place to yell at him thinking he told Howard there was something going on between them. Bernadette tells him there is a chance for him with Penny though.

Amy and Penny decide to go out, but Howard and Sheldon are in the hall so Penny asks Amy if she can stay at Amy’s place (Amy says yes and will teach Penny her secret language).

Sheldon calls Leonard’s mom for a video chat to try to help Leonard out. All she has to tell him is “buck up sissy pants.”

Penny and Amy continue there “sleepover” when Raj shows up at Amy’s door. Raj tries to ask Penny out on a date, but she turns him down saying what happened was a mistake. He reveals to her that they never actually slept together, because he had “finished” before she even got protection put on him. They talk and declare themselves still friends.

The guys are out playing paintball, Leonard confronts Raj about not telling him Priya is moving back to India, and says he’s not in the mood for paintball, and everyone but Sheldon is ready to give it up. Sheldon tries to convince them otherwise, and says the “mutiny” is his fault because he hasn’t earned his position, so he decides to sacrifice himself for the other guys taking multiple hits, and the other guys go out to take out the other team.

Back at the apartment the guys raise a toast to Sheldon. Penny comes to the apartment to apologize to everyone. She decides that she is going to move back to Nebraska, because she sucks at acting…but then her agents calls to tell her that she got a part in a hemorrhoid commercial. She leaves the apartment saying she’s going to be a star.

We then get to see her commercial…see it here!

5×02 – The Infestation Hypothesis

Leonard is getting set up for a “dinfast” date with Priya over video chat (Sheldon’s word since it’s breakfast time for Priya and dinner for Leonard). Sheldon suggests that Leonard moves on now that Priya is no longer in America and get a hobby. Priya calls in and Sheldon heads over to Penny’s apartment to get away from them.

At Penny’s apartment, Sheldon says he enjoys her new chair. Penny then reveals to him that she found it on the street, causing Sheldon to freak out about “sitting in garbage” and runs to shower where he finds a wet band-aid on the shower floor, and runs out of the apartment in his underwear.

At work, Howard asks Leonard if he and Priya are having cybersex, but Leonard says he could never do that. Howard tells him if he doesn’t, he’s going to loose Priya to another guy who grew up with Kama Sutra coloring books in India. Sheldon runs into the lab then and says he got bugs from Penny’s chair, while Leonard reminds him of all the other times he has freaked out about nothing.

Sheldon is dreaming that he has gone to Penny’s to tell her she needs to get rid of the chair. She tells him she had it fully cleaned, and Sheldon decides to try the chair again. All of the sudden he is covered in bugs, he then wakes up, runs to Penny to tell her to get rid of the chair, but she closes the door in his face and says no. He continues to try to convince her to get rid of it, and she finally gets rid of Sheldon by putting the cushion up to him, sending him running.

Leonard and Priya attempt to have cybersex, but Leonard has no idea how to do it, trying his best to do dirty talk. Priya tells him to just be quiet and do what she says…he gets naked, and just as she is about too, his computer freezes.

Amy is practicing playing the harp, when Sheldon shows up, to try to convince her to get Penny to get rid of the chair.

Howard has created an interface with kissing simulators. Leonard says he is not going to try it, when Raj volunteers to use the simulators with Howard (creating an awkward situation of the making out through the program).

At Penny’s apartment, Amy is trying to get Penny to realize that the chair is unhygienic, but Penny knows right away that Sheldon sent her. Penny gets upset with Amy for taking Sheldon side. When Penny tells her to just leave, Amy overreacts to losing Penny as a friend, and rushes to sit in the chair to show her loyalty to Penny, but gets bitten by something living inside it, and the girls run screaming out of the apartment.

Leonard is trying again with Priya, holding a notecard with what he will say on it, but Priya tries to stop him to warn him that her parents are there.

Outside, Howard and Raj come across Penny’s chair on the side of the road, and they attempt to bring it up to Leonard and Sheldon’s apartment.

5×03 – The Pulled Groin Extrapolation

The gang is eating dinner together at Sheldon and Leonard’s apartment. Howard tells his “honey” they should get moving for the movie, which Raj thinks means him, and Howard has to explain to him that NOW that means Bernadette not Raj (but Bernadette says it’s fine if he comes) and Penny heads off to work. Sheldon tries to get someone to take him to the new train store. This leaves Leonard and Amy at the apartment, and Amy decides to stay even though Leonard tries to imply she should leave.

Leonard is trying to work, but can’t seem to concentrate with Amy there…he asks if she is ok because she is just staring at a wall. He says he thought she was reading, and she said she was but now she is thinking about what she had just read. She ask Leonard why he feels so uncomfortable, not catching on that Leonard really just wants her to go, but he tells her to stay as long as she like (which she does).

Howard, Bernadette and Raj are on their way to drop Sheldon off to the train store. Howard thinks that once married he and Bernadette will move into his mother’s house. They argue and Bernadette demands Raj takes her home, but Howard insists they keep heading to the theatre.

Leonard gets out of the shower and Amy is still sitting on the couch. Sheldon comes back and says he’s never going back to that train store again, because it was a setup to trick “weak minded spineless rubes into buying H.O. starter sets”. Amy asks Leonard to go with her to a wedding because last time Sheldon acted like a child. She leaves saying times have changed since she was younger now having had two dates to weddings.

Bernadette arrives at Howard’s house to apologize for fighting. Howard suggests they give it a trial run, to see what it’s like to live with his mother.

Sheldon is playing with the train set he bought and Penny gets Amy ready for the wedding.

After dinner, Bernadette and Howard are up in his room, but Bernadette is clearly uncomfortable, and Howard’s mom keeps shouting upstairs to them.

At the wedding Leonard appears very bored, while Amy is having a great time. Amy tells him he’s not being very much fun on their date. He asks what she suggests then, and she wants him to dance saying she’ll lead. They get out on the floor and begin doing the chicken dance.

Bernadette walks in on Howard playing with his light saber, and tells him that she needs to brush her teeth, but his mom has been in there for an hour. Howard tells his mom to just give up because Bernadette has to brush her teeth, but his mom says she’s not embarrassed and Bernadette should just come in. Howard thinks that solves the problem and Bernadette says she’s not going in there, but then his mom announces that she finally went. Howard goes to light a candle in the bathroom and says when he comes back they can make love.

Amy and Leonard get back to the apartment, and he has pulled something in his leg from dancing. He goes inside and Amy runs over to Penny’s to tell her that Leonard has fallen in love with her, and says she’s going to have to break his heart.

Sheldon ask how the wedding went, and Leonard says Amy really knows how to loosen someone up, even though his groin is a little worse for the wear. Sheldon karate chops Leonard’s shoulder, and tells Leonard ” She is not for you!”

Bernadette brings Howard breakfast in bed (she and his mom made it). Howard asks if there is butter, and Bernadette tells him it’s butter flavored syrup. Howard’s mom shouts up stairs to ask if he likes the pancakes, and she shouts back “HE DIDN’T TRY THEM YET!” They continue to shout back and forth (in the way the Wolowitz family does) and Bernadette goes down to get butter, leaving Howard to have to cut his pancakes all by himself.

Thoughts -
Overall, it seems like the group moved passed Penny/Raj “sleeping” together rather quickly, though Penny and Raj know the truth about what happened, the rest of the group doesn’t, and it only seems to have affected them for the premiere episode. The finale of last season, and the beginning of the premiere of this season gave the impression that it was going to be a much larger issue, and I understand that it’s a comedy, but I still wanted to see a change in the group dynamic for more than one episode. I didn’t want the group completely torn apart over what happened for a long time, but it would be a pretty big deal if this had happened in real life…though I guess you can argue that they are such good friends that they can see they made mistakes and move on.

Some of my favorite moments in the show are still Howard and his mom shouting at each other, especially when she treats him like he is still a kid. Episode three really made me love it even more, especially with Bernadette in the mix. I think it’ll be fun if Bernadette stays there for a while just to see her become more and more like Mrs. Wolowitz like we have seen in the past, but just for a little bit, because I love Bernadette’s character as she is, and wouldn’t want her to change so drastically.

I have noticed that Amy’s character has changed drastically though. Even by the middle of last season there was a lot of change, but especially in these three new episodes. I know in many ways Amy is supposed to be influenced by her friendship with her “bestie”, Penny, but it seemed like it happened a little too fast. At first I thought the change was too much for her character, but the latest episode really made me love the changes, because she was hilarious (not that I didn’t find her hilarious before), I just hope they don’t take her character too far to the point where she just becomes ridiculous.
