How I Met Your Mother 7×07 — Noretta (Guide and Review)

James comes to visit the gorup, and everyone is jammed in at the table because everyone is in a relationship. Barney tells the group he and Nora are going to “Bootytown.” Lily is surprised that they haven’t slept together yet, but he tells her Nora wants to take it slow. Nora keeps telling Barney she has a surprise for him, and that’s why he believes they will be sleeping together. She tells them they are going to go ice skating…but then tells him after they are going to shag.

James tells the group he doesn’t like Barney with Nora, because everything thing she does is vaguely like their mother. She hugs him the same way, the British accident (which their mom would do from time to time) and she would also say she has a special treat for Barney. Kevin tells James it’s normal for people to be with people like their parents. Lily tells Marshall she won’t be able to sleep with him again until she has the baby because she no longer feels sexy. Ted tells Robin he thinks Kevin is great except for the fact that the other day Kevin was standing in the apartment in his boxers.

Barney is at the skating rink with Nora, and she tries to show Barney she can skate with one foot, when she ends up tripping and knocking out a tooth, but Barney says he can work with it.

Barney took her to a 24 hour dentist, and then Nora says they should call it a night. He convinces her to go for one more drink, when a rat lands on her head. He says “I can turn this around.”

Robin talks to Kevin about keeping his pants on in the apartment. He tells Robin if Ted complains about that, then he has something to compalin about too. He tells her that Ted was walking around with his robe open and spilt his coffee on himself so he had to take off his pants. She takes Ted’s side but says it’s because he’s fragile right now because he’s alone.

Marshall tries to convince Lily that she is still sexy, by creating a game called Chutes and Lilys. She then realizes that Kevin was right that you end up with someone like your parents…both her dad and Marshall love board games.

Nora tells Barney she’s just going to go home. Bareny tells her to come back to his place, and he will draw her a bath and poor some champagne. They go out to the balcony, and then a man commits suicide in front of them by jumping off the roof.

Ted walks in on date night with Robin and Kevin, and then Robin tells Ted he can stay, which Kevin isn’t too thrilled about.

Marshall tries to give Lily a romantic bath, but she can’t help but keep seeing her father.

Robin is giving Ted a back massage, and he asks her to go to a concert and Ted says, “it’s a date.” Kevin then says if Ted goes on a date with Robin, he doesn’t have to wear pants in the apartment.

Lily tells Marshall she can’t stop picturing him as her dad. Marshall tells her that it’s ridiculous, because she’s nothing like his mother, but then he realizes that Lily is a lot like his dad (midnight snacks, and the sounds she makes when her feet hurt), then he can’t help but picture his dad.

Barney finally admits the night is ruined. Nora tries to comfort him, and tells him there is no sense in letting anything bring them down. She then begins singing “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music, and Barney starts to see her as his mother.

Lily is trying to get romantic with Marshall, but then they both start seeing each other as their dads, and say they can’t go through with it.

Kevin pulls his pants back up, and he then sees Robin as his mom, but isn’t surprised. He says Ted is just acting fragile, and that Robin was probably the first person he asked to the Weird Al Yankovic concert, and we see that Ted pretty much tried to ask everyone. Ted begins to pout and Robin tells him she can’t go to Weird Al because she doesn’t like him. Kevin tells Ted he’ll go with him because he’s a huge fan, but then he tells Robin he doesn’t like Weird Al at all after Ted leaves the room.

The gang is at the bar, and Ted tells them he was the one who gave Weird Al the suggestion for “Like a Surgeon.” Barney tells them, if Nora is like his mom, he’s the luckiest guy. Lily and Marshall get past their issue and go to make love. Ted tells Kevin and Robin to head out and watch their movie. Ted is still at the bar, and a woman apparoaches Ted and says she’s a huge Weird Al fan…he sees his mom, but doesn’t really care.

Hollywood, CA 1985…Weird Al opens Ted’s fan letter suggesting some ideas for Weird Al and also “Like Surgeon,” which Weird Al starts recording right away.

Thoughts:
This is probably my second favorite episode of the season (the first being Victoria’s return). I actually laughed out loud a few times with this episode, and there were tons of great callbacks to past seasons (which I always love). This episode actually had me hoping that Ted and Robin were interested in each other again…though it probably wouldn’t be a good idea for the writers to put them back together, it was fun to play with the idea.

This episode also made me dislike Kevin slightly less. I think because they actually had a purpose for his character this episode, which if you read my post from the last week’s episode, I said that I felt Kevin didn’t really have a purpose other than to serve as Robin’s boyfriend.

Let’s hope the rest of the season only gets better!!
