Supernatural 7×04 — Defending Your Life (Guide and Review)

In Dearborn, Michigan, a man is being chased by a car, he manages to get away, but then turns around and the car is behind him. He begins running again, and runs up to his apartment on the 10th floor, he turns around and the car is in the apartment and smashes him against a wall.

Dean and Sam show up the next day and cops are everywhere. Their EMF scanner goes crazy inside the apartment of the man (Matthew Hamland). Sam then finds red dirt on the ground, and $50 changes each month to a place named Jane’s. Dean goes to investigate Jane, and Sam goes to the man’s AA meeting (after Dean finds a 10 year sober chip).

At AA the woman tells Sam that Matthew didn’t share much information about himself, and he came close to drinking again at one point but she talked him down.

Dean gets to Jane’s and it’s a flower shop. The woman tells Dean that Matthew had paid her three years in advance to keep his monthly flower delivery to Elizabeth Durin going.

Dean goes to visit Elizabeth, but it leads him to the grave of a 10 year old girl.

Sam and Dean go back to the motel to investigate and find out that Matthew accidentally ran over the girl on her bike 10 years ago while drunk.

They go back to the cemetery to burn the girl’s bones.

Another man is being chased, and he runs inside a diner. A dog jumps at the door and he shouts “keep that thing away from me.” He calls the cops, and when he looks in the mirror the dog is behind him, and it kills him.

Dean and Sam get back to the motel and they read about the guy being attacked by a dog in a paper, but no one heard or saw a dog. They read that the man ran a dog fighting ring 5 years ago, but then he began helping at Humane Societies.

They go to the coroners and find more red dirt with the body.

They go out to an apple farm, because red dirt is supposed to help apples grow better. A man runs out in front of their car, they get out and take him along, when he doesn’t tell them what the problem is.

They get back to the motel, and he tells them he held up a liquor store and killed a man and his wife in 1981. He did 30 years, got parole and just got out, but he said he was jumped in a bar and woke up in a court room, in a barn, at an apple farm and he got grabbed at Neil’s Tavern (which is where Matthew almost began drinking again). He then tells them he saw symbols, and he draws some of them.

Sam and Dean walk outside, because Dean says maybe what is happening isn’t so bad since the ghosts are after bad people. Dean decides he’s going to go to the tavern, and Sam goes out to the barn.

Sam stops back inside the motel, and asks the man to help him find the barn. The man refuses though and says the people he killed are at that barn. Sam puts the man inside a salt circle and heads out to the barn himself.

At the tavern, Dean questions one of the bar tenders, but she tells him she hadn’t been there all week. A man sitting at the bar listens in to what Dean is talking about.

Sam reaches the barn and sees red dirt. His phone rings and it’s Bobby, telling him the symbols are from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, and it they refer to Osiris who looks into the hearts of people to find guilt, if he finds any he kills you. Bobby tells him that he and Dean need to get out of there, since he goes after people who feel guilty, he’s going to go after Dean.

Dean gets a call, but he’s snatched by something.

Sam tries to reach Dean, but Mia (the bartender) finds his phone on the ground and answers. Sam says he’s going to meet her at the bar.

The man is waiting in the motel when the TV and electricity start to flicker. He leaves the salt circle and the people he killed start coming after him. The male ghost says “you did it to us” and he shoots the man.

Sam gets to the tavern, and finds red dirt on the ground where Dean was taken, and he goes back to the apple farm.

Dean wakes up, and Osiris is sitting on a throne in front of him. He tells Dean he overheard him talking, and then Osiris tells Sam to come in. Sam tells Osiris to let him act as Dean’s attorney, and Osiris agrees. Osiris tells Sam he gets to call three witnesses. The first he calls is Jo Harvelle. Osiris tries to convince Jo that if she didn’t have feelings for Dean she would have never gone out as a hunter. She insists it wasn’t like that, but he’s not convinced. Sam then says she idolized her father and that’s why she became a hunter, and she agrees. She says “Dean I don’t…” and Osiris makes her disappear.

He gives Sam and Dean a moment to speak, and then he calls Sam as the next witness. He talks to Sam about the fact that he was ready to have a normal life, until Dean pulled him back into the fight which brought along death and pain in Sam’s life, because Dean wanted to be damned with someone rather than alone. Osiris then tells them that if Dean truly believes he’s innocent, then he will be free. Sam then says he wants to call Dean to the stand.

Sam questions Dean about if he knew that Jess was going to die, Dean says no and Sam says since he’s not psychic he can’t feel guilty. He then asks if Dean killed Jo and if he really feels guilty or just sad that Jo is gone.

Osiris then asks Dean if he wants to call the last witness (Amy the demon he killed last week behind Sam’s back), and Dean says no. Osiris then sentences Dean to death and tells him to get his affairs in order quickly.

They get back to the motel where the man is being taken out by the coroner. They begin to try work out how to save Dean. Bobby calls and tells them they’ve found a way to get rid of Osiris for a few centuries. They need to stab him with a ram’s horn. Sam head out to go find one.

Dean surrounds himself with salt, and tells Jo she can come out now.

Sam gets to a synagog for the horn.

Dean and Jo talk and she then tells him it’s time, and turns the gas on, on the oven, she then breaks the window to blow the salt circle away. She tells him that Osiris is making her do it. She pulls out his lighter.

Sam then sneaks up on Osiris attacking a girl at the bar, and manages to stab him.

Jo is able to drop the lighter and leaves.

Sam and Dean talk, and Sam asks who the last witness was going to be, but Dean lies and says he doesn’t know. Sam tells Dean the reason Osiris didn’t come after him is because he doesn’t feel guilty anymore. Sam tells him that he spent time in Hell, and he feels like his past is his past and he can move on.

Thoughts :
Another very good episode for Supernatural! I love that they brought Jo back, because she was one of my favorite characters. I really liked the scene between her and Dean, though I kind of wish it was a little more dramatic, and that Jo would have shown more emotion, and at least seemed like she was trying to fight against Osiris’ spell over her.

On a side note, I wish Sam would get a haircut, his hair is really starting to look ridiculous. For a demon hunter, the potential for having your hair fly in your face isn’t very practical, and I don’t picture you’d really want to keep up with that kind of hair with life on the road. Yes, I’m a nerd and these are the things I think about haha.
