Elena’s alarm goes off and she gets out of bed. She looks in the mirror at Stefan’s bite marks on her neck from the previous night at the high school. She and Alaric go out to the woods so he can train her to fight. He tells her she needs to start lifting weights to build muscle, and also tells her he believes that she will learn to be tough.

Bonnie, Caroline and Elena start their first day of senior year. Elena remembers that that day should have been her and Stefan’s anniversary.
Damon comes downstairs at the Salvatore house. There is a girl dead at the bottom of the stairs, and Stefan is playing a vampire version of Twister (where you spin the spinner and are bitten in that spot first). Rebecca comes to the house and tells Stefan that Klaus left her, and Stefan tells her he doesn’t care and she’s not staying there, but she goes to get herself a room anyway.
Jeremy finds Bonnie, but she tells him she’s not happy with the fact that he keeps allowing Anna and Vicki back in.
Matt pulls into the school parking lot, and Vicki appears in his truck. They discuss their first day of school last year. She tells him there is a way he can help her come back, but then Tyler comes to get him and she disappears.
Katherine is trying to wake Michael the vampire hunter. Damon calls, and she tells him Michael won’t eat, and then she sees a man in the cemetery and goes out to him.
Damon calls Elena, and he tells her that Rebecca is staying with them, and she should stay away. Elena see Caroline in the hallway after she hangs up with Damon, and they talk about the upcoming “Spirit Bonfire.” Tyler interrupts and then they notice blood on his shirt. They push him in the bathroom, and he tells them Rebecca gave him a blood bag. Caroline asks why he went to Rebecca, and he tells her that Klaus wants her to watch over him, and he thinks it’s pretty cool that he is Klaus’ first successful hybrid. Caroline gets mad at him for saying that. Elena walks out of the bathroom and bumps into Stefan who has just re-enrolled in school, so he can watch her as instructed by Klaus. Alaric tells Stefan to leave her alone, and Stefan tells him, he better stay out of his way.

Elena explains to Alaric that Stefan is being compelled to watch over her because Klaus still needs her for her blood. Stefan walks into class and sits next to Elena, and shortly after Rebecca comes in and joins the class.
Vicki finds Matt again, and she explains that she can only come back when Matt is thinking about her right now, but she has help from the other side. Jeremy walks by and says he was just looking for his lab partner and moves on.
Jeremy talks to Anna in the bathroom and tells her what he overheard Matt and Vicki talking about.
Vicki tells Matt that she’s been talking to a witch on the other side who can do a spell to push her over to this world, and she can come and go where she wants, when she wants.
Anna tells Jeremy it’s possible if Vicki finds a strong enough foothold. She tells Jeremy that he is her anchor, and explains that you can’t change the balance of nature without a price, and they don’t know what that price could be.
Matt agrees to help Vicki.
Rebecca joins cheerleading practice with Caroline and tells her she is interested in her popularity and maybe even Tyler. Tyler is nearby doing drills for football, when he compels the coach to let them leave early. Caroline tells him to be more subtle, he tells her he’s fine with Klaus’ new “gift.” Rebecca in the meantime is showing off to the cheerleading squad. Stefan approaches Elena as she runs on the track, and he calls her a “human blood bank.”
Katherine feeds Michael the man’s blood and he finally wakes up but insists she get the blood away.
Elena is at the Salvatore house, and Damon walks in on Elena lifting weights. She tells Damon she wants to lock Stefan up until Klaus is dead and the compulsion is gone. He promises her no one will hurt her, and tells her where a vampires weak point is.

Many of the students from the school have gathered for the bonfire. Elena, Damon, Caroline and Alaric talk about how they plan to take down Stefan that night. Tyler walks in and Elena asks him to raid his mom’s vervain supply, but he tells her he can’t do that because it’s not in Klaus’ best interest. Damon realizes that Tyler has been “sired” meaning he feels loyal and wanting to gain approval from the person who turned him…Klaus.
Matt is preparing the ritual for Vicki to return. The spell works, and Matt is able to physically touch her.
Jeremy tells Bonnie that some how Vicki has found someone else she can talk to on the other side, even though they are supposed to be all alone. Bonnie gets mad at Jeremy for continuing to talk to Anna, and not telling her that Vickie was speaking with a witch and walks off and says she’d rather deal with Matt trying to resurrect his dead sister.
Vicki tells Matt that if she wants to stay in this world, she has to keep the balance, and Klaus’ hybrids aren’t supposed to be, so she has to get rid of Elena, because she is the key. He tries to stop her, but she knocks him in the head with a wrench.

Damon flirts with Rebecca to keep her distracted, while Elena works on getting Stefan away from the bonfire.
Matt calls Bonnie and tells her what happened.
Vicki gets to the bonfire.
Rebecca realizes that Damon is trying to distract her, stabs him with a branch and walks off.
Tyler wakes up back at home with Caroline sitting there and tells him about being sired, and that he’s back to acting the way he was before he was a werewolf and she would never date that guy. He promises he’ll try to keep better control of himself.
Elena is laying on the bleachers at the football field. Elena tells Stefan she’s driving home but she can barely walk straight, and he tells her he’s taking her home. She falls off the bleachers and he catches her, while they look in each other’s eyes, Alaric shoots him in the back with vervain darts.

They stick Stefan in the back of a car.
Bonnie tells Matt she has to figure out how to send Vicki back.
Vicki lights a gasoline trail on fire that starts Alaric’s car on fire and traps Elena inside.
Bonnie finds a spell to block the magic that is helping Vicki.
Elena wakes Stefan, and he kicks the back of the car open. Vicki gets pulled to where Matt and Bonnie are by the spell. Matt tells her he can’t let her hurt anyone and it’s wrong for her to be there. Bonnie finishes the spell and Vicki disappears.
Alaric pulls Stefan out of the car just before it explodes.

Elena tells Damon that she saw him flirting with Rebecca, and he tells her he was faking.
Caroline leaves Tyler’s house, and Rebecca appears, and brings him a girl to feed on, at first he tells her to go, but then he gives in.
Michael tells Katherine he has deprived himself human blood longer than he can remember. He tells her he does know how to kill Klaus, and she frees him. He tells her he doesn’t feed on living things, and then jumps up and feeds on her.
Elena tells Stefan she’s not giving up on him, and he tells her that it makes her pathetic, she says it makes her strong and stakes him in the stomach.
Anna appears in Jeremy’s room, and says she shouldn’t be there when he’s calling his girlfriend (because that means he’s thinking about her). He tells her he can’t stop thinking about her, and she says she can’t stop thinking about him. She puts her hand up and they can feel each other, but she doesn’t know how.
Someone is breaking things in the Salvatore house, Damon assumes it’s Stefan, but it’s actually Mason Lockwood, Tyler’s uncle who is supposed to be dead.
