Once Upon A Time 1×02 — The Thing You Love Most

Mary Margaret looks out the window, and notices the town clock has changed.

Regina is looking through Henry’s fairy tale book, and comes across the image of the Evil Queen/herself, and then turns the page, and there are pages missing. She asks Henry where the pages are, and he asks why she cares when he’s not even his mother, but she tells him she is, not Emma. They hear the town clock chiming, and Henry runs out.

Regina and Archie see the clock, and Regina clearly isn’t happy. Regina sees Emma’s car outside the Bed and Breakfast.

Regina goes to the B & B, and brings Emma a basket full of apples. Regina tells Emma she should leave town, but Emma says that makes her want to stay more, and can read between the lines as to what the apples symbolize. She then threatens Emma if she doesn’t leave.

We again see when the Evil Queen turned up at Snow White and the Prince’s wedding, and now see what happened after she disappeared from it. The Mirror asks her about the curse she plans to cast, and they say that “she” won’t be happy to see the queen when “she” finds out she is planning to use the curse, because she traded for the curse but said she would never use it. She tells them she is going to the Forbidden Fortress.

The Queen and Maleficent talk about how Snow White bested her, and Sleeping Beauty did the same to Maleficent. The Queen tells her she needs her dark curse back, and Maleficent tells her that she traded her sleeping curse, but the Queen says it failed because it was fixed by a kiss. Maleficent refuses to give it back, so they fight using magic, and the Queen manages to trap Maleficent and gets the curse back. Maleficent tells her they shouldn’t cross this line by using the curse, and it will leave a void in her that can’t be filled, but the Queen doesn’t care.

The Queen talks to the other villains, and tells them she is going to put an end to their misery, by taking them to a place where they can finally win, and she then performs the curse. Nothing seems to happen though…

In the real world, a reporter brings Regina a newspaper, where he wrote a story about Emma destoying a historic sign. The reporter, Sidney, tells her he found nothing else, but will try to find something negative about her, otherwise Regina threatens to get rid of him.

Emma receives a hot chocolate from Sheriff Graham at a cafe, but he tells her he didn’t send it when she approaches him about it…Henry appears and tells her he sent it, and she walks him to school. He tells her he has a plan called Operation Cobra and explains the curse to Emma again…no one knows they are fairy tale creatures, time has been frozen for decades, she’s the daughter of Snow White and the Prince, and they have to stop Regina (and don’t eat her apples). He tells her he took out the end of his fairy tale book, which tells about Emma, that it’s important that Regina doens’t find out who she is.

They get to his school, and Mary Margaret tells Emma that Henry believes she is Snow White.

Emma goes to see Archie, Henry’s psychologist, and asks what it means that Henry is translating everything to fairy tales. He tells her that it’s his way of dealing with his life, and the real issue is Regina, and he gives Emma Henry’s file. He then calls Regina, and tells her she took the file, and Regina says she was the one who gave Emma the idea to go see him.

Sheriff Graham shows up at her room at the B&B. He tells her that Archie reported her for stealing Henry’s file, and arrests her.

Regina goes to the school, to tell Henry that Emma has been arrested, and she’s a con, but Henry doesn’t believe her and walks off.

Graham is booking Emma, when Henry shows up with Mary Margaret to bail Emma out.

Regina is working in her office, when she hears a chainsaw start up. She looks outside, and Emma is cutting her apple tree down. Emma tells her if she doesn’t back down, she will chop down the rest of her tree.

The Queen’s servant tells her if she wants to find out why the curse isn’t working, she needs to speak with the person who gave her it in the first place, and once she starts down the road, there is no going back.

The Queen goes to Rumpelstiltskin, and he reveals that he told Snow and the Prince that their unborn child can break the curse. He tells her that if she wants the curse to work, she has to give him a very comfortable life in the new world, and she must do whatever he says in the new world as long as he says please. She reminds him that he won’t remember anyway, so he says what’s the harm. He tells her the key to the curse is the heart of the thing she loves most. She tells him that what she loved most died because of Snow, but he tells her there must be something else, and to go kill it.

Granny approaches Emma, and tells her she has to have Emma leave, because the Mayor’s office called and reminded her felons aren’t allowed.

Graham tells Regina he believes that Emma was setup, but he doesn’t believe arresting her again for the apple tree will do any good because the only person who will get hurt is Henry.

Regina calls Emma and tells her to walk to her office (because she had boots put on her car) to make peace.

Regina tells Emma she has to accept that Emma is staying in town, but if she doesn’t want Henry, why is she there. She tells Regina she feels she needs to help Henry after seeing his files. Henry hears Emma call him crazy, and runs off, to which Regina tells Emma she knew Henry was standing there…

The Queen gets back to her place, and tells her servant that he is the thing she loves most….she says “Daddy, I don’t know what to do.” He tells her not to enact the curse, but she says it’s eating her alive what Snow took from her. He tries to convince her that the emptiness isn’t worth doing the curse, but the choice is hers. She hugs him, but tells her she can’t be happy in the fairy tale world, and stabs him.

Emma goes to Mary Margaret’s place, to pay her back her bail money. Mary Margaret invites her in to talk. Snow convinces Emma she needs to stay for Henry’s sake.

Emma walks in on Henry’s session, and tells Henry that she believes him, and she was only telling Regina what she wants to hear, which is how they will trick her, which is what Operation Cobra is about…throwing her off the trail. She throws the last pages of the book into the fire, to ensure that Regina will never see them.

The Queen throws her father’s heart into a fire to complete the curse. She then walks over to his grave…on the grave is written HENRY.

Mr. Gold aka Rumpel, approaches Regina, and tells her that Emma hasn’t left town and is with Henry. He tells her that he can help…for a price. She tells him she doesn’t make deals with him anymore after the last one, in which he got Henry for her, and he sarcastically asks how she picked the name Henry. Regina asks why he picked Henry, and who Emma is, and he says she knows exactly who Emma is, but he’s not giving her any answers, and leaves.

Thoughts:
This episode definitely hooked me on the series!! I love that Henry and Emma have now set out on their mission to stop Regina/the Evil Queen together, and I LOVE the battle between Regina and Emma.

The battle between the Queen and Maleficent was great, and I wish it would have lasted a little longer, but that’s my only complaint for this episode.

I really liked that we got to see the softer side of the Queen, it really made her character a lot more three-dimensional. I think overall the series has some really interesting characters, and I can’t wait until more is revealed about each of them, and what Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold plans to make Regina do for him, and why he chose Henry…does he want everyone brought back to the fairy tale world?
