Damon is chained to a chair and his sunlight ring has been taken of as Stefan looks on. Stefan says he didn’t do it, and walks away…then Mason Lockwood opens the curtain and sunlight pours in on Damon.
It’s the Night of Illumination ceremony in the town square. Jeremy is there as Anna tells him most of what is being said about the history of the town is lies, she holds his hand but only he can see her still. Bonnie and Caroline are talking and Bonnie says she went against the balance of nature when she brought Jeremy back, and he being able to see Anna is the price she has to pay. Damon pulls up, and tells Bonnie and Caroline that he saw Mason’s ghost. Bonnie says ghosts shouldn’t be able to interact with people.
Elena approaches Jeremy to ask if he can contact Stefan’s dead, vampire friend Lexi, since he says in his diary that she was always the one to bring him back when he went over the edge in the past. Alaric says maybe it’s not a good idea to get dead people involved anymore after what happened with Vicki.
Bonnie’s grimoire opens itself to a spell to cause ghosts to manifests.
Bonnie and Caroline go to the place Bonnie bought Jeremy back to life and the dead witch spirits had been.

When Bonnie did the spell to send Vicki back, it opened the door even further allowing anyone with unfinished business to come back. When Bonnie asks what the witch wants, Sheila tells her it’s Original vampire business and Bonnie should stay out of it.
Caroline calls Elena and tells her that the witch on the other side draws power from our side through her talisman over here….Elena’s necklace. In order to close the door, they have to destroy the necklace.
Lexi approaches Elena and tells her she is going to give her a course in how to fix Stefan (Ripper).
Mason tells Damon he is back to help Tyler, and tells him he knows of a weapon to kill Klaus. He tells Damon to come to the Lockwood cellar with a shovel, alone.
At the city jail, Lexi has Stefan tied up. She tells Elena they are going to have to convince Stefan to turn back on his humanity. Lexi says the first step is to dry Stefan out so it removes the temptation. Lexi begins to do something to Stefan which causes his veins to buldge…when he asks her what he’s doing as he makes noises in pain, she says she’s saving his life.
Damon gets to the Lockwood cellar, and Mason tells him that there is a legend that the Lockwood’s had a weapon that can kill Originals. Damon smashes a wall, and a tunnel is revealed.
Lexi tells Elena that Stefan is hallucinating that he is at five years without blood. Caroline calls, but Elena tells her to hold off on sending the ghosts back. She hangs up but Bonnie overheard part of the conversation, and Caroline tells Bonnie Jeremy kissed Anna.
At the Illumination Night, Jeremy is looking around for Anna, and accidentally bumps into someone. The man approaches Anna, and it’s Fredrick. Nobody can find Tobias Fell who is supposed to be at the ceremony, so Alaric steps in in his place. Behind Fredrick several other men walk up, and Fredrick says they have some unfinished business with the founding families. In the distance is a scream, and a man is hanging from a tree and bloody.
Stefan begs Elena for help, but Lexi tells her not to listen. He begins to get angry, and Lexi tells Elena that you have to make him feel until he’s ready to be saved. Lexi continues to stab him, and Elena can’t watch anymore. She goes outside and hears sirens. She see’s the officials taking a body away.
Bonnie and Caroline are searching the Salvatore house for the necklace. Jeremy calls and tells Caroline the vampires killed Tobias Fell. Caroline accuses Anna of taking the necklace, but Anna says she didn’t take it….Caroline calls Jeremy an idiot for believing Anna. Elena approaches Jeremy and asks what happened.
Damon and Mason continue down the tunnel, and stakes start flying out of the wall and Damon is impaled.
Mason gets Damon free…
Bonnie and Caroline are driving when they see Mrs. Lockwood’s car crashed on the side of the road. Caroline gets out of the car to help her as the ghost vampires surround Mrs. Lockwood’s car, and Bonnie heads back to the witch house.
Anna tells Jeremy she took the necklace in hopes that she could find her mother and because she didn’t want to be alone anymore. Jeremy heads to the witch house with the necklace.
Elena tells Lexi they don’t have much time left, and Lexi reminds him what the necklace meant to him when he found it…hope. Stefan says it’s ironic that the necklace is about to be shattered then.

Stefan asks Elena what she plans to do now…she tells him she’s going to go on with her life until he learns to feel again, she leaves him tied up.
Jeremy tries to apologize to Bonnie, but she tells him to just go. After he leaves, a huge flame bursts in the fireplace where the necklace was burned….when Bonnie goes over to it, the necklace is back and whole again.
Alaric looks around the tunnel and finds images on the wall that look like cave drawings.
This episode was probably one of my favorites for the whole series. I loved seeing so many characters that we haven’t seen for a long time come back, and I love that each one was given such a strong emotional reason for being back. I feel like the audience could really feel the loss each character felt as they lost their loved ones again. My favorite moment was probably between Anna and her mom.
Stefan’s storyline still really bothers me…I’ve said before that it’s really going to take a lot to redeem his character. Since most of this is his choice, I still just can’t see how the audience can learn to like his character again, and see him as a good person. I really don’t understand how Elena could ever love him again after all that he’s done as Ripper either. I would understand her not wanting to give up on trying to bring him back to the person he was, but to say that she still loves him doesn’t make sense to me. I was happy to hear her admit that she doesn’t plan to wait for him forever, but I just don’t see why she is waiting at all. I know they had a strong, romantic relationship, but a lot has changed since he became Ripper.
